Material Spotlight: Aluminum Bronze

Compared to other bronze alloys, aluminum bronze is recognized for their high strength and corrosion resistance. What’s more, it displays low rates of corrosion in atmospheric conditions and is tarnish-resistant. Aluminum bronze also does not oxidize as much at high temperatures and does not react with sulfurous compounds. As they are not susceptible to corrosion caused by sea water, this material is widely used in the marine industry. At A&A Coatings, you can opt for aluminum bronze materials in our thermal spray coatings. Let’s find out more!

Types of Aluminum Bronze Coatings Available at A&A Coatings

  • HVOF Aluminum Bronze Coatings

Typical Composition: Aluminum 9.5% | Iron 1% | Copper (Balance)

At A&A Coatings, we offer fine grade aluminum bronze powder that can be used to produce high bond strength coatings. This is done using the High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) process – the end product: HVOF aluminum bronze coatings. If you require thermal spray coatings for soft bearing applications and/or coatings that can resist cavitation, hard surfaces and fretting, HVOF aluminum bronze is the recommended option. What’s more, they can be easily tapped, drilled, milled and machined to your desired finish. These materials also have a unique set of physical properties that make them suited for restoring mis-machined or worn non-ferrous components.

HVOF Sprayed Aluminum Bronze coatings not only exhibit higher tensile bond strength than conventional aluminum bronze deposits, they also have a surface finish that is finer than comparable standards.

  • Metallized Aluminum Bronze Coatings

Typical Composition: Copper 90% | Aluminum 9% | Iron 1%

Our aluminum bronze alloy materials can be sprayed via the metalizing process. Using this thermal spray process, we can produce metallized aluminum bronze coatings that have twice the hardness and strength of other standard bronze alloys. You never have to worry about coarse atomization because the deposits can be easily machined to achieve an excellent finish. What’s more, they are very dense and show exceptional resistance to wear and corrosion.

Aluminum bronzes are perfect for most general metallizing work with bronze. They serve as an extremely effective bond coat for surfaces that have not been prepared up to standards. Materials with inferior surface preparation may include steel and cast iron. Compared to arc spray bronzes, metallized aluminum bronze coatings provide maximum wear resistance. Metallized aluminum bronzes are no longer only used as bond coats today. They can be used to coat bearings in the steel industry as well as reclaim bronze or aluminum components of propeller shafts, armature bushing, bronze castings, pump impellers, plungers and more.
